Mechanical Pulp

Mechanical Pulp

Mechanical wood pulp is a type of pulp produced through a mechanical process to break down wood fibers into smaller parts. This process differs from chemical pulp production where wood is treated with chemicals to dissolve lignin, resulting in a purer fibrous pulp. Instead of chemicals, the mechanical process uses mechanical force to separate the fibers from each other.

The process starts with feeding the wood into a machine where it undergoes mechanical processing. This may involve refining, grinding, or shredding the wood to separate the fibers and form a fibrous pulp. During this process, water may also be used to facilitate processing and help separate the fibers.

The resulting mechanical wood pulp can have different properties depending on how the process is carried out. The pulp can be coarse and uneven or fine and uniform depending on the desired use. It may also contain some unwanted materials such as bark or other impurities that need to be removed through various purification steps.

Mechanical wood pulp is typically used for manufacturing products such as paper and cardboard where high strength is not a primary factor. It is also used in some specialized applications where its coarse structure or specific properties are desirable. Unlike chemical wood pulp, mechanical pulp retains more of the wood's original properties and may be more cost-effective to produce, but it may also be more prone to aging and yellowing over time compared to chemically produced pulp.
