Rapid Köthen is an automated sheet former that offers significant advantages in the evaluation of mechanical pulps and chemicals. By drying under pressure and high temperature, lignin softens, thereby contributing to increased strength in the sheet.
In Rapid Köthen, sheets with a diameter of 20 cm are automatically produced. After dewatering, the sheets undergo drying under pressure at a temperature of approximately 85°C. This results in lignin softening and integration into the sheet. This process closely mimics conditions in a paper machine, allowing the obtained results to be transferred and applied on a full scale. Tests are conducted in accordance with ISO 5269-2 and 5269-3 standards to ensure accuracy and comparability.
This method allows for comprehensive evaluation of wood-containing papers with different basis weights across a wide spectrum. Not only does this method enable evaluation of the material's physical properties, but also its optical properties.
Furthermore, Rapid Köthen tests allow for a detailed study of the effects of various chemicals, for example, in connection with the introduction of new process chemicals. By conducting an initial screening study on a small scale, it is possible to reliably and cost-effectively evaluate how different pulps and pulp blends affect the final product.
In this context, Rapid Köthen serves as an invaluable tool for optimizing processes, improving product quality, and reducing costs in the paper and pulp industry.
